Highschooler Romance

It is the stuff movies are made of. It is also the stuff that sells a lot of Rolaids for mom.

My daughter was dumped in the usual way people get dumped these days- over text. Fairly unceremoniously. He simply told her that she no longer made him happy. I wanted to react, I REALLY did. But I waited for her reaction instead. It didn’t take long for the phone to be tossed across the room.

I breathed a sigh of relief in that moment. Because if she is angry, she is less likely to have taken the obligation to make him happy at all times, to heart.

I wanted to shake him. No one makes anyone happy 100% of the time!!! Grow up kid!! (Oxymoron, I know).

Love is not about someone making you happy although that is natural bi-product. I have definitely struggled trying to explain to my girls what true love is. They have asked when I stopped loving their dad. It never occurred to me that they would ever question that I loved their dad. I just cannot care for him, live with him, engage with him on a regular basis and expect to come out sane at the other end.

I think these days people are confused by love and romance. Every person has their own definition. Their own set of needs when it comes to love and romance.

Humor and sarcasm are deeply rooted in my family and that carries through to both girls. If you can laugh together, odds are, you can do a lot of other things together. It is the best medicine.

I hope that one day the girls will find someone who enjoys their company, makes them laugh, and is committed to walking through life with them. They may not find that in high school, but I hope they find it.
